MRI Breed
The only cattle breed of true Dual Purpose in the World, with greater
production of meat and milk of livestock, is the Meuse Rhine Issel (MRI), which gives more money to gain in
milk and meat.
MRI cattle were developed in the south and east of the Netherlands (Holland) in the catchment
areas of the Meuse, Rhine and Issel rivers in the years 1874. MRI calves get a higher price per head than any other
breed for the following reasons. MRIs’ production is between 18 and 32 litres of milk per cow per day, having 320
days of lactation.
Cows have a fat protein average between 4.32% and 3.47%. The milk produced by this breed
contains a protein with a component called "High Kappa Casein - BB" ideal for making cheese.
Adult’s bulls weigh between 900 - 1100 kg and adult cows weigh between 600 to 800 kg, the male
calves at 8 to 10 months weigh between 350 to 400 kg and females at 8 to 10 months weigh between 300 to 350 kg. All
this information is based on grazing.
They are easy to handle animals, they have good performance in wet and dry
places, good fertility, calving ease, the calf weighed 40 kilograms at birth, are animals with good and strong
legs for long distances walking, low maintenance requirements, easy milk speed and do not require support of
the calf.
